Far-removed from the traffic problems encountered by major cities and long before the introduction of the national urban transport scheme (Plan de Déplacements Urbains or PDU), Reims has been striving to keep its traffic flowing freely since 1987, when the city opened its central traffic regulation centre (REMI), which controls 110 crossroads. The system has been continuously upgraded since then in an effort to improve traffic conditions and, more specifically, the free flow of bus traffic (lines A, B and D are particularly concerned). Materials and equipment at the traffic centre are upgraded regularly to keep abreast of technical developments.
171 of the 234 crossroads equipped with traffic lights are regulated in real time by REMI.
