Situated in the city centre between the cathedral and Saint Remi basilica, the Conservatoire National de Région de Reims specialises in the teaching of music and dance.
Founded on 12 July 1912 and inaugurated by French President Raymond Poincaré on 19 October 1913, Reims School of Music has occupied various buildings the latest of which, with its highly individual shapes and curves inspired by a violin's ribs and sound holes, opened in September 1994. The work of architects Jean-Loup Roubert, Henri Dumont and Jacques Bléhaut, it is an architectural gesture combined with an acoustic technique at the service of music and dance.
Excellent facilities:
Since 1994 then, Reims has benefited from a truly first-rate resource: a vast structure bathed in light with modern, functional facilities set in a friendly environment and set off by a central patio and cafeteria.
With its excellent facilities and 35 disciplines, it also has two auditoriums with outstanding acoustic properties where a hundred or so concerts are put on each year as well as student auditions. It works on the principle of musical diversity and as wide an appeal as possible.
• 2 auditoriums with seating for 400 and 100 (exceptional acoustic quality – digital control room in both auditoriums)
• 7 large halls or rooms (for public lectures, auditions, etc.)
• 2 large dance studios
• 1 media resources centre (musical scores, books and revues)
Although pedagogical content is shaped by the Ministry of Culture, Communication and the Performing Arts, it is the City of Reims that oversees the running of the Conservatoire.
The educational and promotional missions of state-governed arts education establishments are specified in two main texts:
- The Schéma d'Orientation Pédagogique (pedagogical orientation plan, dated 1992)
- The Charte de l'Enseignement Artistique Spécialisé (charter for specialist art education, dated 2001)
1,300 to 1,400 pupils attend the C.N.R. each year, over 90% of whom are from the Champagne-Ardenne region. The school offers a 3-cycle curriculum as well as a specialist pre-professional course (Cycle Spécialisé Pré-professionnel).
Its 90 teachers are of an excellent calibre, providing teaching both for amateurs and would-be professionals.
