Situated in the city centre between the cathedral and Saint Remi basilica, Reims regional academy of music and dance (CNR) was founded on 12 July 1912 and opened by French President Raymond Poincaré on 19 October 1913. Reims School of Music has occupied various buildings the latest of which, with its highly individual shapes and curves inspired by a violin's ribs and sound holes, opened in September 1994. The work of architects Jean-Loup Roubert, Henri Dumont and Jacques Bléhaut, it is an architectural gesture combined with an acoustic technique at the service of music and dance.
Excellent facilities:
Since 1994, the Reims has thus benefited from a truly first-rate resource - a vast structure bathed in light and modern, functional facilities set in a friendly environment and set off by a central patio and cafeteria.
Against this backdrop offering a 35-discipline spectrum and benefiting from exceptional acoustic quality, its two auditoriums put on a hundred or so concerts a year for all types of audience, and as many pupil auditions. Its policy is geared towards diversity of music and openness to all types of audience.
• 2 auditoriums with seating for 400 and 100 (exceptional acoustic quality, digital control room in both auditoriums)
• 7 large halls or rooms (public lectures, auditions, etc.)
• 2 large dance studios
• 1 media resources library (musical scores, books and reviews)
Although pedagogical content is shaped by the Ministry of Culture, Communication and the Performing Arts, it is the City of Reims that oversees the running of the Conservatory.
The educational and promotional missions of state-governed arts education establishments are specified in two main texts:
- The Schéma d'Orientation Pédagogique (pedagogical orientation plan dated 1992
Charte de l'Enseignement Artistique Spécialisé (charter for the specialist art education, dated 2001)
Each year, the CNR takes in from 1,300 to 1,400 students, over 90% of whom are from the Champagne-Ardenne region. The school offers a 3-cycle curriculum as well as a specialist pre-professional course (Cycle Spécialisé Pré-professionnel).
A 90-strong teaching team provides high-quality tuition for amateurs and future professionals alike.
