Zone 30 refers to areas where the speed is limited to a maximum 30 km an hour. They first appeared in the French highway code at the end of 1990.
Zone 30 areas make it possible to strike a balance between everyone using the roads, to make travel safer and to make the environment more pleasant by reducing noise and pollution. They allow different forms of transport to coexist and are important in that they form part of Reims Métropole's urban transport scheme (PDU).
Asking for the area where you live to become a Zone 30 sector is doubtless commendable but it is worth knowing that the creation of such zones is subject to detailed studies that take into consideration such factors as daily or hourly traffic flow, how the location is laid out, the presence of a building used by the general public, etc.
